Staying focused

One of the greatest enemies of accomplishing ‘anything’ is distraction. Whether you’re in  middle school, preparing for college, applying for a new job, starting a relationship or building a career, distractions will get you off focus every time – if you let them. Distractions happen to everyone on every level.  Some of the most prominent people in our world struggles or struggled with success because of a distraction.

The Free Dictionary’s definition of distraction is, (1) To cause to turn away from the original focus of attention or interest; divert. (2) To pull in conflicting emotional directions; unsettle.  Distractions come in many shapes and forms. It can be a person, place, thing or a thought.

Sometimes while I’m writing articles, different things in my environment attempt to divert my attention.  I have to consciously change my surroundings in order to focus because if I don’t, I will never complete my assignments.  I will turn off the television, put my phone ringers on silent, hide my vehicle and tie my three children to a tree if I have to LOL.

The more obvious distractions are easier to avoid, it’s the subtle ones that hurt you. Last year I remember writing this article that was due by a certain deadline.  It required tons of research and a lot of brainstorming.  I needed to be focused to get this job done.  However, I started receiving anonymous letters in the mail that ruffled my feathers.  I was beside myself because of the nuisance.  Everyday when I sat down to work I would remember those letters, pull them out, re-read them, torture my mind trying to figure out who would do such a thing, thus being diverted from my original purpose.  I became so preoccupied with the distraction that I missed the deadline and a financial opportunity as well.

So whatever you’re trying to accomplish, remember to protect yourself from the enemy of your success.  Distraction.  Just as you would watch the weather report predicting rain, you prepare yourself and dress accordingly, i.e. raincoat, umbrella, etc.  By the same token, understand that deterrents will always come to stop you from reaching your goals, so prepare for them and protect yourself.  Adjust and rearrange your environment if necessary.  Do whatever you have to do to remain focused and obtain your prize.
